Welcome to the first unit of Lent Illustrated: Reflection and Renewal! Today is the beginning of our first unit, Refrain. Refrain is a time to focus on the habits, practices, and people that may not be good for us; to take stock of where we are and where we want to be spiritually; and to renew our spiritual focus and lift our eyes towards God. You can learn more about this unit and our Lenten study in the full eBook, available here!

As you journal today’s verse, you may choose to dwell on the imagery of ash and repentance. Or you may choose to look forward, illustrating a heart rising out of ashes or what it means to you to have a “renewed spirit” after a time of struggle. As we enter Lent this week, use these early days to reflect not only on repentance, but also on the spiritual new beginnings this season offers.
