Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.
(2 Corinthians 4:16)

Today we begin the first week of our second unit, Return. When we give, we return to God what is His, whether that is by sharing our spiritual or material gifts with those around us, or by using the talents we have been given to honor and worship. At the same time, this time of giving allows our hearts to return to that which is truly important; their Maker.
Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God that he has given you.
One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.

Welcome to the first unit of Lent Illustrated: Reflection and Renewal! Today is the beginning of our first unit, Refrain. Refrain is a time to focus on the habits, practices, and people that may not be good for us; to take stock of where we are and where we want to be spiritually; and to renew our spiritual focus and lift our eyes towards God. You can learn more about this unit and our Lenten study in the full eBook, available here!
And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Seasons Illustrated began with Advent. Advent is a rush; the fast-paced days and weeks leading up to Christmas, in which we prepare our hearts and homes for the birth of Jesus. I’ve always loved it for that reason; it sings with anticipation and excitement. It feels like a deep breath in.
